Daniel Ortega has declared that Nicaragua will hold "no more elections," saying there will "never, never, never" be another vote during a speech marking the 47th anniversary of the Sandinista Revolution on 19 July.

The Nicaraguan president said opposition groups were backed by foreign interests and vowed to introduce laws preventing what he called "traitors" and "coup plotters" from returning to power.

The remarks come after years of growing international criticism over Ortega's crackdown on political opponents, media and civil society, and are being seen as his clearest public rejection yet of future electoral competition in Nicaragua.
